Louise Barry research collection, circa 1819-1974.

This collection contains the research notes, clippings, and copies of historical documents used by Louise Barry for her research on a variety of Kansas and Midwestern topics. Also included is correspondence. Topics include the Santa Fe Trail, Clarina Nichols, 1825 land surveys for the Kansas Indians, Osage Indian peace treaty, Kansas River navigation of 1854-1861, John Brown, the blizzard of 1886, county histories, cattle trains, various notable Kansans, Kansas colleges, the Kansas constitution, Buffalo Bill, Kansas laws, early exploration, First Christ Church, and other topics. The correspondence from the early 1970s discusses her publication, "The Beginning of the West," along with a few book reviews. Copies of historical documents date as far back as 1822, while the correspondence is largely dated during the 1960s - 1974. Some files of research notes are organized by year of event, ranging from the 1850-1870s.

Louise Barry was a librarian and indexer at the Kansas State Historical Society until 1974. She was interested in Kansas history and was known to study and collect records relating to numerous Kansas and frontier topics. Barry is known for her publication, The Beginning of the West: Annals of the Kansas Gateway to the American West, 1540-1854, published in 1972.
